MANAGING STORMWATER: RECOMMENDED ORDINANCE

Developing the Huron Creek Watershed Management Plan

The main requirements to be included in the proposed stormwater language ordinance are:

  • Each development site must have completed an analysis on the peak discharge for a two, ten and 100 year frequency storm (that is a volume of storm that would occur every two, ten and 100 years)
  • The design of a stormwater system will be needed to regulate the runoff from a developed site.   This system must be designed to ensure that the rate and volume of post-development runoff equal that of pre-development runoff for the storms of two, ten and 100 year frequency.
  • Stormwater systems may include detention ponds, parking lot storage, underground tanks, infiltration trenches, and bioswales.   Each component must be built according to Best Management Practices guidelines and sound engineering principles.
  • The design of a system must include a plan for adequate maintenance and operation over the lifetime of the system.   This will include a maintenance schedule, inspection schedule, and person’s responsible.
  • The design shall be visually alike the surrounding landscape.

The Village of Baraga Stormwater Managment Ordinance (pdf file) is an example of a local ordinace created for this purpose.
