Utah Pottery Project Support Page

The Utah Pottery Project exists because of the passion of an interested community of researchers.

Individuals can support the project in many ways.  How can you help the research?

1. I have old documents (photos, a diary, account books, a letter, etc.) that relate to Utah's Pottery Industry.

2. I can provide direct financial support for student scholarships and fieldwork operating costs (or I can help though in-kind donations of supplies or services.

Providing documents, photographs, information, objects, ephemera, and other relevant material.

The UPP gathers together information related to the potters, their families, and their businesses.  We're interested in all manner of primary historical documents- diaries, letters, photographs, advertisements, period descriptions, bills, account books, and so on.

Anything you'd like to share can be sent to Timothy Scarlett at the contact address below.  Copies of material, as appropriate and by permission of the donor, will be made available to everyone via this web site.  The document's owner will probably choose to keep the original item and share photocopy or photographic duplicates.  Should the donor wish to send the original, each document will be donated to an archive in Utah.  These archives are set up to care for historical materials, as the Marriott Library cares for the Sheri Slaughter Collection for example.  This will also make the original materials available to researchers.

Those interested in donating pottery artifacts or other objects should contact Dr. Scarlett to discuss those special issues surrounding non-document gifts.   The archaeological collections, documents, and any relevant objects will return to a museum facility in Utah where researchers can study them.

Providing direct financial support.

The UPP operates with a combination of research and foundation grants and private donations.  Researchers continually apply for research and conservation grants from agencies, foundations, and programs.  Private donations from individuals play an important role in keeping the project active.  Donations help provide for field research, student scholarships, web development, public lectures, and other programs.

All donations are fully tax deductible.  Gifts for the UPP are currently managed by the Michigan Tech Fund.  Direct donations of cash are very important for student scholarships and other needs.

In-kind donations are also needed.  The 2009 field research seasons, for example, will require the following-- camping equipment, blacktop removal and replacement, landscape restoration, shovels, screens, archival storage material, minor hardware and equipment, etc.

If you could sponsor all or part of any of these needs, please contact Timothy Scarlett.  Checks should be made out to either "The Michigan Tech Fund" and clearly indicate "Utah Pottery Project Fund" on the front of the check.  Supporters can now make direct donations using a credit card or check card on the web here100% of your donation goes toward the project and is entirely tax deducable.
