Born and raised in Marquette, Michigan and is a 1981 graduate of Marquette Senior High School.

Received a Bachelor of Science degree from Northern Michigan University in 1984, with a major in Economics and a minor in History. Also received a teaching certificate for middle and high school levels.

Earned a Masters's Degree in Secondary Education from Northern Illinois University in 1989.

Has taught Social Studies Teaching Methods course and coordinated student teaching assignments for social studies teachers at MTU since 2000. Has taught at Chassell High School since 1990, and at Finlandia University since 2001.
