Welcome to SMELT/Low Birker!
I am glad that you dropped by and hope that you will spend some time with us to explore what we are doing and how you can be a part of the work. SMELT/Low Birker is an archaeological research project that is exploring Viking Age, c. AD 1000, iron production and life in the Upper Esk Valley, Cumbria, England.
SMELT/Low Birker is housed in the Social Sciences Department at Michigan Technological University. The project also involves scholars, students and volunteers from across the United States and from the U.K. We are actively seeking to expand our work and invite all interested people to look at what is here, ask questions and, I hope, become involved in SMELT/Low Birker.
The next several pages will introduce you to some of the results of our work, what is happening right now, and what will happen in the future. Like all web sites, we are in a state of creation, so ask questions, tell us what you would like to see added, and we just might do so. Along with what we have for you here, at the end of this web site there are some links to other sites that might be of interest to you. So look around, let us know what you like, and what you don't like, and come be a part of the work in England this summer.
