Social Science - BS: Secondary Education Option

Student Teacher Tim Scarlett Teaching Instructor and Students after a Mock Trial Kim Hoagland Teaching

The teacher certification program in Social Studies at Michigan Tech is unique among Michigan's colleges and universities. It is designed to prepare teachers to face the technological challenges of the 21st century by preparing students to teach in both Social Studies and some area of science or mathematics.

The Social Studies Education program at Michigan Tech requires students to:

  • Develop a strong content foundation in the Social Studies.
  • Be cognizant with and competent in the instructional uses of a wide range of educational technology.
  • Be qualified through training in a minor to also teach in one of the natural sciences or in mathematics as a minor field.

Successful graduates of this program will achieve Michigan RX certification and are qualified to teach in secondary schools in any of the four basic Social Studies fields: History, Government, Geography, and Economics.

In addition, graduates will also be qualified to teach in at least one field of science or mathematics. Because we want the highest quality students in this program, academic requirements for students pursuing the Social Studies Education Option in Michigan Tech's Department of Social Sciences are higher than for the Department's other degree options.

Graduation Requirements are for Non-transition Students.
