Liberal Arts - BA: History Option

Gun Foundry Lankton Lecture Copper

The history curriculum at Michigan Tech has its foundations in the traditional liberal arts, but its particular strength is in the history of technology. Four of the department's faculty specialize in the history of technology or environmental history, a larger concentration than found at most American universities. A number of other faculty specialize in the related field of archaeology. Undergraduate study in history has traditionally been used to provide students with the background necessary for professional careers in teaching, law, the ministry, business, governmental administration, journalism, archival and museum work, and historical preservation.

The history curriculum at Michigan Tech is flexible. In addition to university general education courses, the history curriculum requires students to take:

  • Basic courses in the major social sciences
  • At least one year of a foreign language
  • A year of American history
  • A year of European history
  • A semester of historical archaeology

In addition, the history curriculum provides students with a large block of history electives (15 credits) to focus their studies on particular fields such as European history, American history, industrial archaeology and history, or the history of technology.

Another substantial block of courses in the curriculum (18 credits of free electives) allows students to explore offerings in other departments or to focus their studies towards future career goals (e.g., by taking business courses if they plan a career in business or communications courses if they plan a career in journalism or publishing).

Graduation Requirements are for Non-transition Students.
